IP LOCATION

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT IP LOCATION

IP means "Internet Protocol. It is treated as the name of a communication protocol through the network. Then on the other hand you have the IP address, which is the number you choose or is assigned within the network, and which is the Internet's way of knowing who is who.

They are therefore a kind of "registration" to identify you when you are connected

Can someone know where you live just by your IP address? We have already told you that a public IP is the address that your operator assigns you when you connect to the Internet, a unique registration with which you identify when browsing, thanks to which the pages and online services know where they have you than send the data.

But today we are going to talk about other possibilities offered by IP addresses, that of geolocating someone. We are going to tell you how far you can know your physical address through your IP, and how reliable this method can be to locate a person.

What is IP geolocation?

We talk about geolocation based on IP addresses when an IP address is assigned the actual geographical location of a device through which the Internet is being accessed. This geolocation implies that the IP address is assigned a country of origin, region or city, the latitude and longitude of the position in GPS and the name of the ISP or operator that assigns the IP.

The US ARIN or the European NIP RIPE is some of the centers in charge of supervising the assignment and registration of the numbers of Internet resources in specific regions. They have the Whois of the IPs, the information on who owns each one, and they offer this information to many of the agencies that request it.

And what will someone want this information for? Many web pages need methods to identify where their visitors come from, and pairing IP addresses with a geographic location is one of them. It is one of the factors that helps to pre-fill out the forms with your country of origin or that a website appears in your language when you visit it.

It also helps security, since the owners of electronic stores have with it a tool to reduce credit card fraud depending on the location where they are used. In addition, in the case of being suffering a cyber attack or illegal spam, an administrator can know from where the action is taking place.

How accurate is this geolocation?

IPGEO

In the network there are several databases, some for free and others for payment, that offer their clients the possibility to obtain geolocation of the IPs that visit them through codes and APIs that they can insert into their websites. Ip2location , MaxMind , Tamo Soft or IPligence are some of them, and depending on the database the accuracy with which you are geolocated can vary between 50% or 98% .

By making use of these databases on the Internet you can find several pages capable of knowing the physical location of an IP. However, these pages do not usually offer specific addresses, and often give a neighborhood and sometimes even populations that do not correspond to the person who navigates with that address.

This is because the address that is actually registered in your IP is that of the provider with whom you have contracted your Internet rate. When you connect, your provider assigns you one of their internal IP addresses, and since they are yours, it is your postal address that will appear on the pages when you search for geolocation.

This means that if your IPS has the offices in your same city, when you go to one of these pages you will see which city you live in, but they will not show the street where your house is or the portal number. Also, if you live in a small population or with your IPS offices outside, the geolocation of the IP will show a different population.

Be that as it may, with how big is the Internet and the billions of people that enter daily, the country from which you navigate, the province from which you do it and even your locality does not stop being important data that you may not want that any web you visit can know.

How to geolocate an IP address

To geolocate an IP address you only have to search for pages that offer this service. It is worth to search in Google terms like "ip geolocation" to see several alternatives, many of which are the same ones that also serve to automatically know what your IP address is. We are going to use Infolocatin.net, for example, because it is one of the most visual and easy to use.

When you enter this page, your connection data will automatically appear. You will see that the query field appears automatically filled with your IP, and just below it appears your geolocation. In addition, below this map will appear the data assigned to the IP, such as who is the provider, its host or the latitude and longitude tied to the IP.

The map that appears to you can choose whether it is from Google, Microsoft or Yahoo, and you can zoom in to see even the building registered in it. I remind you that it is not your physical location, but the operator assigned to you by your IP.

Above the map, in the field Consult that you have filled in automatically with your IP, you can enter any other public IP . By doing so, the page will show you all the data you have from the address you have entered. As we have explained to you, it may not give you the exact location, but you will know the population or province in which the owner of the IP lives.

If you want to hide your IP so that the pages you visit cannot obtain it and have information about you such as your country or province, we have already told you that you can do it using proxies that allow you to browse more anonymously. And if you want greater security, you can also use a VPN.
